E-waste (electronic waste) refers to discarded electrical or electronic devices. It contains toxic substances including lead, mercury, cadmium, chromium, brominated flame retardants, and PCBs. When informally processed or landfilled, these toxins leach into groundwater and soil, causing serious health risks.
Under DPDP Act 2023, a simple format or quick wipe is NOT sufficient. At minimum, a NIST 800-88 multi-pass overwrite must be used for HDDs. For SSDs, physical destruction (shredding) is the only forensically accepted method.
