Expert answers on e-waste recycling, ITAD, data destruction, DPDP Act 2023, pickup costs, buyback prices and Kerala e-waste laws — from Kochi's certified KSPCB-authorized recycler.
General Information
5 questionsE-waste recycling is the certified process of recovering valuable materials from discarded electronics while safely neutralizing hazardous components like lead, mercury and cadmium. In Kochi, which generates over 18,000 metric tonnes of e-waste annually, proper recycling prevents toxic contamination of the Periyar river basin and ensures compliance with India's E-Waste Rules 2022.
Yes. EWaste Kochi holds KSPCB (Kerala State Pollution Control Board) authorization No. KL/EW/628, making us one of only three authorized e-waste processing facilities in Ernakulam district. We are also EPR-registered with the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB), Government of India.
Our main facility is at 710A, Hill Palace Road, Thrippunithura, Kochi — open Monday to Saturday 8AM–8PM, Sunday 10AM–4PM. For corporate clients in Infopark, Smart City and Kakkanad, we offer free same-day pickup. For residential areas across Ernakulam, we pick up within 24 hours of booking via WhatsApp.
Call or WhatsApp +91-75005-55454 for same-day e-waste collection anywhere in Ernakulam district. For 10+ devices, collection is completely free. We cover all Kochi zones: Infopark, Kakkanad, Smart City, Edappally, MG Road, Fort Kochi, Thrippunithura, Aluva, Vytilla and all surrounding areas.
We accept all 21 categories of e-waste under India's E-Waste Rules 2022: laptops, desktops, servers, smartphones, tablets, TVs, monitors, printers, networking equipment, air conditioners, refrigerators, washing machines, batteries, UPS systems, LED/CFL bulbs, medical diagnostic equipment and more.
ITAD & Corporate Retirement
5 questionsITAD stands for IT Asset Disposition — the certified, auditable process of retiring IT equipment. A complete ITAD service includes: asset inventory and tagging, NIST 800-88/DoD certified data destruction, Certificate of Destruction, KSPCB-compliant recycling, value recovery through buyback, and DPDP Act 2023 compliance documentation.
EWaste Kochi is the preferred ITAD partner for 500+ businesses in Kochi and Kerala, including IT companies at Infopark, banks on MG Road, hospitals in Ernakulam and manufacturing firms in Kalamassery. We are KSPCB authorized, NIST 800-88 certified, and DPDP Act 2023 compliant — providing the complete audit trail needed for any corporate compliance review.
Certified IT asset destruction involves NIST 800-88 or DoD 5220.22-M data destruction of all storage media, followed by eco-responsible recycling, with a serial-numbered Certificate of Destruction issued for every device. EWaste Kochi provides this for all sizes — from a single laptop to a 500-device enterprise IT refresh at Infopark.
E-waste recycling focuses on material recovery (metals, plastics, glass). ITAD adds four critical corporate layers: certified data destruction to NIST/DoD standards, serial-numbered Certificate of Destruction, chain-of-custody documentation, and DPDP Act 2023 compliance evidence. For businesses, ITAD is mandatory; recycling alone is insufficient.
Our 6-step ITAD process: (1) Pre-project assessment and inventory; (2) Asset tagging and manifest documentation at pickup; (3) Secure sealed GPS-tracked transport; (4) NIST 800-88 data destruction at our Thrippunithura facility; (5) KSPCB-authorized recycling of device materials; (6) Certificate of Destruction + DPDP compliance report delivered within 24 hours.
Data Destruction & Wiping
8 questionsNIST SP 800-88 R1 (Guidelines for Media Sanitization) is the US federal standard for permanent data destruction, widely recognized as the global benchmark. It defines three levels: Clear (software overwrite), Purge (degauss/cryptographic erase), and Destroy (physical shredding to <5mm). While India's DPDP Act 2023 doesn't mandate a specific standard, NIST 800-88 is accepted by regulators, Big 4 auditors and courts as satisfying the Act's data destruction obligation.
A hard drive destruction service uses industrial equipment to physically shred hard drives, SSDs and other storage media to particles smaller than 5mm — making data recovery physically impossible. EWaste Kochi's facility in Thrippunithura, Kochi offers both in-plant hard drive destruction (devices transported to our facility) and on-site mobile shredding (our shredder comes to your premises). We process HDDs, SSDs, NVMe M.2, backup tapes, USB drives and all storage formats.
No. A factory reset or format only removes file system directory entries — the actual data remains on the storage medium and is recoverable using freely available forensic software. Studies show 40–70% of second-hand devices still contain recoverable data after a reset. Only NIST 800-88 certified destruction (software overwrite + verification, or physical shredding) ensures data is permanently and irrecoverably destroyed.
Yes. Every data destruction job at EWaste Kochi receives a Certificate of Destruction (CoD) listing: each device's make, model and serial number; destruction method (NIST 800-88 level applied); date and time; technician ID; and our KSPCB authorization number. You receive digital (PDF with digital signature) and physical copies within 24 hours.
Yes. All devices accepted for recycling at EWaste Kochi undergo mandatory data destruction before any further processing — regardless of whether they're being recycled or refurbished. No device with storage capability leaves our custody without NIST 800-88 certified erasure or physical destruction. This is what makes us a "data-secure IT recycling" partner, not just a recycler.
Yes. Our secure computer recycling service for offices in Kochi covers the complete process: free pickup for 10+ devices, NIST data destruction, Certificate of Destruction, and KSPCB-certified eco-recycling. We serve corporate clients across Infopark, Kakkanad, Smart City, MG Road, and all of Ernakulam district with same-day service available.
Data wiping (software overwrite) uses algorithms to overwrite all data on a functioning drive — effective but cannot guarantee all over-provisioned areas on SSDs are reached. Hard drive shredding is physical destruction to <5mm particles — absolute and irrecoverable by any known method. For SSDs and highly sensitive data environments, physical shredding is always recommended. EWaste Kochi offers both, with physical shredding recommended for all enterprise and financial data.
Yes. Our mobile shredding unit can come to your Kochi premises for on-site hard drive destruction — data never leaves your building. Ideal for banks, hospitals, government offices and defence contractors. Witnessed destruction available with video recording. On-site mobile shredding available Monday–Saturday with 48-hour advance booking. Minimum 50 drives or ₹5,000 service charge.
Compliance & Legal (DPDP)
5 questionsIndia's Digital Personal Data Protection Act 2023 requires data fiduciaries (businesses that process personal data) to erase personal data when devices are retired. Every laptop, server and phone your company disposes of likely contains personal data of employees, customers or others. The Act mandates certified destruction — not just deletion or formatting. Penalties for non-compliance range from ₹50 crore to ₹250 crore.
Yes. EWaste Kochi's Certificate of Destruction is specifically designed to satisfy RBI IT Framework for Banks requirements, SEBI cybersecurity circular data disposal provisions, IRDAI cybersecurity guidelines, and CERT-In data disposal directions. Our compliance documentation package includes a DPDP Act declaration, chain-of-custody manifest, and NIST-level audit log — accepted by all major audit firms in Kochi.
Under E-Waste (Management) Rules 2022, all "bulk consumers" (companies with IT assets above ₹10 lakh) must: register with KSPCB, maintain e-waste records, file annual returns, and channel all e-waste exclusively to KSPCB-authorized recyclers like EWaste Kochi. Non-compliance attracts fines under the Environment Protection Act 1986 and can result in KSPCB directions to cease operations.
KSPCB (Kerala State Pollution Control Board) authorization under E-Waste Rules 2022 is the legal permission to handle and process e-waste in Kerala. EWaste Kochi holds authorization No. KL/EW/628. If you give e-waste to any unauthorized party — informal scrap dealers, non-authorized recyclers — your company remains jointly and severally liable for improper disposal under the Environment Protection Act, even after you've transferred the waste.
Under the Environment Protection Act 1986 (which enforces E-Waste Rules), penalties include: fines up to ₹1 lakh per day of violation, imprisonment up to 5 years for willful non-compliance, and KSPCB shutdown directions. Under DPDP Act 2023, failure to properly destroy data on retired devices can attract penalties up to ₹250 crore. Using EWaste Kochi eliminates both risks.

Electronic Recycling Tech
5 questionsEWaste Kochi at 710A Hill Palace Road, Thrippunithura, Kochi is Kerala's most trusted KSPCB-authorized electronics recycling facility. We accept all 21 categories of e-waste for recycling. Drop in anytime Mon–Sat 8AM–8PM. For 10+ items, we pick up free anywhere in Ernakulam. Unlike informal kabadiwalas, our process is certified, legal, and data-safe.
Our certified recycling process: disassembly into component streams (PCBs, batteries, metals, plastics, screens) → data destruction on all storage media → PCBs sent to authorized precious metal smelters → batteries to authorized Li-ion/lead-acid recyclers → metals to certified smelters → hazardous materials (mercury, lead) to authorized hazardous waste facilities → KSPCB recycling certificate issued. 98.2% of all material is diverted from landfill.
Walk-in drop-offs are free for all items. Free pickup for 10+ devices anywhere in Ernakulam. For buyback items, you get paid (not charged). The only fee is a ₹100 handling charge for CRT TVs/monitors due to the high cost of processing lead-glass. There are no hidden fees.
Yes. We accept all large appliances: TVs (LED, LCD, CRT), air conditioners (split, window, VRF), refrigerators (all sizes), washing machines (top and front load), microwave ovens. ACs and refrigerators require special handling for refrigerants — we are equipped and authorized for this. Schedule a pickup for large appliances at no cost.
Informal recyclers in Kochi use methods that are toxic to workers and the environment: open burning of wires (releases carcinogenic dioxins and furans), acid baths for gold recovery (toxic fumes, acid waste), and CRT screen breaking (lead dust contamination). They also have zero data destruction capability — your data goes with the device. EWaste Kochi's certified process eliminates all these risks.
Battery Recycling Safety
2 questionsLithium-ion batteries require specialized handling — thermal runaway (fire risk) makes them one of the most hazardous e-waste categories. EWaste Kochi stores, transports and processes Li-ion batteries in fire-rated containers and sends them to KSPCB-authorized Li-ion battery recyclers where cobalt, lithium, manganese and nickel are recovered. Never throw Li-ion batteries in regular bins — they can cause fires and toxic contamination.
Yes. Lead-acid batteries (UPS batteries, inverter batteries, vehicle batteries) are accepted for recycling. Lead is highly toxic and one of the most valuable recyclable metals. We send lead-acid batteries to licensed lead smelters where lead is recovered at 97%+ efficiency. We accept batteries in any condition including dead/leaking batteries in appropriate containers.
Certificates (CoD / EPR)
2 questionsEWaste Kochi holds: KSPCB E-Waste Authorization No. KL/EW/628 (Kerala State Pollution Control Board); EPR Registration with CPCB (Central Pollution Control Board, Government of India); NIST 800-88 R1 certified data destruction process; DoD 5220.22-M aligned data wiping; ISO 14001 Environmental Management System alignment; DPDP Act 2023 compliant processes.
A Certificate of Destruction (CoD) is a legal document proving data-bearing devices were irrecoverably destroyed. EWaste Kochi's CoD contains: unique certificate number, client details, complete device list with serial numbers, destruction method (NIST 800-88 level), date/time, technician ID, KSPCB authorization number, and facility supervisor signature. Digital PDF and physical original provided within 24 hours.
Server & Data Center
2 questionsOur server decommissioning process: pre-project planning with your IT team to identify all storage media; NIST 800-88 data destruction on HDDs, SSDs, NVMe drives, RAID arrays and embedded flash; physical shredding for non-functional drives; Certificate of Destruction with every drive serial listed; chassis and component recycling; rack and PDU clearance. We serve data centres, server rooms and IT closets across Kochi.
Yes. For urgent server decommissions at Infopark, Smart City and Kakkanad, we offer 4-hour emergency response SLA. Call +91-75005-55454 (available 24/7 for corporate emergencies). We bring secure tamper-evident transport, perform NIST data destruction same day, and deliver Certificate of Destruction within 24 hours of destruction completion.
Residential & Consumer
2 questionsBefore handing over your laptop: (1) Back up important files to external drive or cloud; (2) Sign out of all accounts (Google, Apple, Microsoft, bank apps, social media); (3) Note the serial number for your Certificate of Destruction; (4) Remove chargers and accessories separately (chargers have some buyback value). Do NOT factory reset — it doesn't securely erase data and makes no difference to our destruction process.
Yes. Under India's E-Waste (Management) Rules 2022 and Kerala local body solid waste rules, disposing of e-waste in municipal solid waste bins is illegal. E-waste contains lead, mercury, cadmium and other toxics that harm the environment when landfilled. The correct route is an authorized recycler like EWaste Kochi. While individual enforcement is limited, the environmental harm is real and the legal liability exists.
Corporate Partnerships
2 questionsYes. We offer annual ITAD contracts for companies with regular hardware retirement cycles — common for IT service firms, banks, hospitals and BPOs in Kochi. Contract benefits: dedicated account manager, quarterly or on-demand pickups, consolidated CoD reports, preferential pricing, and priority scheduling.
