Why Batteries Swell: Causes & Handling
Critical safety guide for handling swollen lithium batteries. Learn proper storage, fire prevention protocols, and emergency disposal procedures in Kochi and Kerala.
Important Notice
SWOLLEN BATTERIES ARE FIRE HAZARDS. Store in sand-filled metal container away from flammable materials. Schedule pickup within 24 hours maximum.
Safe Storage Procedure
Initial Isolation
Put on insulated gloves. Place battery in non-conductive (plastic, ceramic, or fiberglass) container. Do not touch terminals or apply pressure.
Sand Container Method
Place battery in metal or ceramic container filled with sand. This absorbs heat and prevents ignition spread.
Cool, Dry Location
Store away from heat sources, direct sunlight, and other electronics. Temperature between 15-25°C is ideal.
Fire Safety
Keep Class D fire extinguisher or sand bucket nearby. Evacuate area if smoke or odor develops.
Signs of Battery Swelling
Visible Bumping - Case bulging at top or sides
Heat Generation - Warm to hot to touch
Gas Vents - Hissing or soft sounds
Rupture Risk - Cracked or deformed case
If Battery Shows Emergency Signs
- Evacuate - Leave area immediately, distance of 10+ meters
- Isolate - Close doors, cut power if safe to do so
- Call - Emergency: 101, Battery Collection: WhatsApp number
- NEVER - Don't use water, don't spread to container, don't attempt to puncture
Swollen Battery FAQs
Can swollen batteries be stored at home safely?
Yes, with proper precautions: in a metal container away from flammable materials, in a cool dry place. Never store in direct sunlight or near heat sources.
What if a battery starts heating up?
Immediately place in sand or ceramic container. Do NOT use water. Contact us immediately for collection. Call emergency services if fire begins.
Can I tape over a swollen battery?
Never tape swollen batteries. The swelling indicates gas buildup and potential rupture. Handle with insulated gloves and place in non-flammable container.
How long can they be stored before collection?
Maximum 7 days for swollen batteries. For safe handling, contact us for emergency pickup within 24 hours. Notify us in advance if storage is needed.
